About

Christian Thielemann conducts Johannes Brahms' Symphony no. 1 coupled with Ludwig van Beethoven's Egmont Overture - two popular symphonic masterpieces. This is Thielemann's third live recording project with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, following his debut concert with Bruckner's Symphony no. 5 in 2004 and Mozart's Requiem in 2005.

The Symphony no. 1 of Johannes Brahms, premiered in Karlsruhe in 1876, was lauded by the famous critic Hanslick as 'one of the most individual and magnificent works of the symphonic literature'.

In the political drama Egmont, Goethe relates the fight of the Flemish Count Egmont against the despotic Spanish invader Alba. When asked by the Burgtheater of Vienna in 1809 to compose incidental music for the revival of the play, Beethoven, who was a great admirer of Goethe, accepted with enthusiasm. The music recalls themes close to his own political preoccupations, already expressed in his opera Leonore (Fidelio).

Thielemann is in the prime of his career, having established himself as the interpreter of German Romantic repertoire with focus on Wagner, Strauss, Beethoven, and Brahms. He conducted Wagner's Ring at the 2006 Bayreuth Festival, and Thielemann has never been more sought-after than now.
