About

One of the great recordings, with an incomparable cast of Callas, di Stefano and Panerai, conducted by Serafin. Re-mastered by EMI in 1997.

In 1888, the magazine ‘Teatro Illustrato’ announced a competition ‘for an opera in one act – with a single scene or two at the most – on an idyllic, serious or humorous theme of the composer’s choice’. The idea was to encourage young Italian composers, and to offer an attractive cash prize. The three winning entries would be given fully staged performances at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. Pietro Mascagni was putting the finishing touches to his opera William Ratcliffe and was intrigued by the competition and the challenge. He and his librettist Giovanni Targioni-Tozetti chose a one-act drama by Giovanni Verga.

In February 1890, Mascagni was called to Rome, and informed that Cavalleria had won. What followed is one of the great events in the history of opera – 60 curtain calls after the premier of Cavalleria, and international fame for a young composer who, up to then had been a hard working and promising provincial composer with no certain career prospects in sight.

The German critic Eduard Hanslick, who was a thorn in Wagner’s side, praised the work for its ‘fresh, energetic and sincere talent’ and went on to praise the modernity of the music and the reality of the drama. Cavalleria Rusticana can be seen as the first opera to be termed as verismo.

Callas is an exceptional artist in this creative artistry if in nothing else. Whether Callas’s interpretation strikes you as ‘beautiful’ or not, it is arresting. So here in page after page of this durable favourite, the music comes at you characterised, experienced and weighted with an artistry wholly out of the ordinary.’ Gramophone, 1954
