About

A highlight of John Eliot Gardiner’s pioneering account of Ein deutsches Requiem is the thrilling choral singing which distinguishes so many of his performances. Charlotte Margiono is the ethereal soprano soloist in this recording.

The booklet contains sung text in German and English.

Reviews

Gardiner's 'revolutionary' account of the German Requiem brings a range of choral sound even more thriling than in the concert hall. With period instruments and following Viennese practice of the time, speeds tend to be faster than usual, though the speed for the big fugue is surprisingly relaxed. Charlotte Margiono makes an ethereal soprano soloist, while Rodney Gilfry, despite a rapid vibrato, is aptly fresh and young-sounding. One could not ask for a more complete renovation of a masterpiece that is often made to sound stodgy and square.
