About

Evgeny Svetlanov (1928-2002) was principal conductor of the Bolshoi from 1955 and then became principal conductor of the USSR Symphony Orchestra which he made into one of the world's greatest orchestras. In 1979 he was appointed principal guest conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. Later he went on to conduct the Philharmonia and then the BBC Symphony Orchestra, as in this recorded concert from 1999.

Along with Mravinsky, Kondrashin and Rozhdestvensky, Svetlanov was one of the great interpreters of Russian music during the latter half of the 20th Century and this entire concert (excluding Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No.2 with Rudy) features Rachmaninov'sIsle of the Dead’ and ‘Two Études Tableaux’ (orch. Respighi) alongside Mussorgsky'sPictures at an Exhibition’ (
orch. Ravel) in performances of tremendous power and passion - hallmarks of Svetlanov's conducting. Superb stereo sound captures the atmosphere of a packed Royal Festival Hall in 1999.

The two Rachmaninov Etudes Tableaux orchestrated by Resphigi appear to be new entries to Svetlanov's large discography, whereas Rachmaninov's Isle of the Dead has been recorded several times. The Mussorgsky/Ravel Pictures at an Exhibition has only one recording on the Moscow Archives label.

Recorded: Royal Festival Hall, London, 28 October 1999.
