About

Michael Minsky was born in 1918, and grew up in Stalin’s Russia. He served in the Red Army during the Second World War, but stayed in the West after the war, where he took over the famous ‘original’ Don Cossack Choir following the death of its founder, Serge Jaroff. Minsky also made a major contribution to the cataloguing of Russian traditional song.

On this CD, he is heard with the Ukrainian Bandurist Orchestra and Chorus which was established in 1918. The period after the revolution of 1917 and up to the mid-1920s was one where Ukrainian culture was allowed to flourish. However, this was to be brutally crushed under Stalin’s rule. Artists and intellectuals were arrested and executed, and nearly every remnant of the country’s centuries-old culture was eradicated. A champion of Ukrainian culture who probably did more to encourage the foundation of the ensemble on this recording, Hnat Khotkeyych was executed in 1938. A composer, writer and ethnographer, his music was banned, and many blind bandura minstrels were shot.

Those who survived were forced into the State Bandurist Chorus of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. The period that followed saw the musicians both exploited and persecuted by Communists and Nazis. Only in 1949, when they had been released from refugee camps, did they make it to the USA and freedom. Some 90% of these ended up in Detroit working in the car industry, touring the world and performing to presidents and heads of state wherever they went.
