More Details on Ferenc Farkas - Danube Valley Garland
Ferenc Farkas (1905–2000), the legendary composition professor of the Budapest Music Academy and teacher of György Kurtág and György Ligeti, was already popular in Hungary as a young composer, due to the beauty and harmoniousness of his music. Over an exceptionally long and active life he composed music in many forms and styles, but his individuality can always be recognized along with his balanced personality, much liked by so many. His music ranges widely, from arrangements evoking the distant past through neo-classical works to twelve-note compositions.
In this CD selection, the latest work is the Dunavölgyi koszorú [Danube Valley Garland] for soprano and tenor with orchestra, composed in 1976. This unusual song cycle symbolizes the brotherhood of the people living beside the Danube, similar to Béla Bartók’s cantata cycle of which only the first was composed, the Cantata profana based on a Romanian text in 1930.
