About

This boxed set of three full-length ballets features some of the most romantic classical ballets, danced by a trio of world-class ballet companies.

SWAN LAKE – THE ROYAL BALLET COVENT GARDEN
This production from the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden was filmed in 1982, and is currently the only Royal Ballet version of Swan Lake available on DVD.

In this staging, with handsome designs by the late Leslie Hurry, the classic Swan Lake choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov has further contributions by Frederick Ashton and Rudolf Nureyev. The great Russian ballerina Natalia Makarova stars as Odette-Odile with Anthony Dowell as Prince Siegfried. Makarova’s enchanting performances as Odette-Odile are legendary – this is one of her most famous roles. Actor Michael Hordern presents this performance from the Royal Opera House.

GISELLE – THE KIROV BALLET
Giselle, the most celebrated ballet of the Romantic era, is seen here in a world-famous production with Marius Petipa’s revised choreography by The Kirov Ballet from the Maryinsky Theatre, St Petersburg, recorded in 1983. It stars Galina Mezentseva as Giselle, whose performances have established her place among the great ballerinas of the Kirov. Konstantin Zaklinsky, as Albrecht, continues the unsurpassed Russian tradition of handsome and athletic male dancers and is a superb partner. Myrtha, the Queen of the Wilis, is danced by Tatyana Terekhova, with Altynai Asylmuratova and Olga Lyhovskaya as her attendants.

LA SYLPHIDE – THE ROYAL DANISH BALLET
La Sylphide, was the world’s first Romantic ballet. The story of James, a young Scottish farmer enchanted by a sylph, or tree fairy, on the eve of his wedding, combines reality and fantasy. La Sylphide is the most famous and enduring ballet by the great Danish choreographer August Bournonville. This production, recorded at the Royal Theatre, Copenhagen, in 1988, features Lis Jeppesen as La Sylphide. She is one of the most famous interpreters of the role, which requires lyrical interpretation as well as superb technique. Equal expressiveness and faultless dancing are required of James, here performed by Nikolaj Hübbe. Sorella Englund is the brilliant interpreter of Madge, the witch and fortune–teller, whose rejection by James leads her to seek dreadful revenge on him, with tragic consequences.
