More Details on Baroque Music on Hemony Carillons in Utrecht
Arie Abbenes plays various arrangements by Bach, Merula and Castello on the City Carilloneur of Utrecht. This rare bell ringing instrument was built in 1656 for the city of Utrecht by Francois and Peter Hemony. It was restored as recently as 1988 and this recording shows off the tremendous versatility of this unique and forgotten instrument.
The arrangement of Purcell’s “When I am in earth” lasts for nearly 20 minutes and as such is one of the most important works on this CD.
