About

For Paris native Thierry Pécou (b.1965), to live is to travel and to travel is to compose.

The works presented on this CD have been entrusted here to the expert fingers of another great traveller, the piano phenomenon Alexandre Tharaud, who premièred the Piano Concerto in 2007. Judging by this muscular, accessible work cast in four strikingly individual movements, Pécou is an important new voice for the 21st century. This is the first recording of the piano concerto.

Alexandre Tharaud's first solo piano recording for harmonia mundi was of harpsichord suites by Rameau, one of the recording events of 2001. Since then he has performed as a soloist with all the major orchestras in France and abroad. He also devotes a large part of his activity to chamber music and his recording of Schubert's 'Arpeggione Sonata' with cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras, also for harmonia mundi, has received unanimous critical acclaim. His recital programme 'Hommages à Rameau', toured widely in Europe.

The Ensemble Orchestral de Paris was founded in 1978 by Marcel Landowski, Roland Bourdin and Jean-Pierre Wallez, with the support of the City of Paris and the Ministry of Culture. At the instigation of John Nelson, music director since 1998, the ensemble has considerably broadened its repertoire, which now stretches from the great classics to premieres of new works (more than fifty to date). The ensemble's recordings and multimedia productions have earned it many awards and nominations.

Andrea Quinn studied at the Royal Academy Music and has been Music Director of the London Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, The Royal Ballet and the New York City Ballet. She made her BBC Proms debut in 2000 and her Vienna Musikverein debut in 2002. She is currently Chief Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Norrlands Opera.
