More Details on To Pan and Syrinx: Music for flute and piano

Presented here is the second disc for Divine Art from Kenneth Smith and Paul Rhodes (DDA25054 was released in 2007). This is another delightful collection of virtuoso pieces – the sonata from Melanie Bonis will be new to many.

Kenneth Smith has won and continues to win many admirers who follow the Philharmonia Orchestra on disc and on the concert platform throughout the world, his individual tone and superior quality of sound having developed under the guidance of such eminent musicians as Aurele Nicolet, James Galway and the almost legendary Marcel Moyse.

In 1983, after 10 years with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Ken accepted the invitation to become principal flute with the Philharmonia Orchestra, which opened up an international career of performing and recording music at the highest level of the world over. Kenneth Smith is now firmly established as one of Britain’s leading flute players featuring on countless recordings from the symphonic and operatic repertoire with the Philharmonia and other leading
Symphony Orchestras.

Paul Rhodes has been described in the press as “an impeccable accompanist – a model of style and refinement, with a sensitivity that allows the soloist to shine whilst providing total musical support”. Paul read music at Edinburgh University where he studied composition with Kenneth Leighton. He continued his piano studies later with Marjorie Hazlehurst at the Birmingham Conservatoire and with Hamish Milne in London. Master-classes with Louis Kentner, Vlado Perlemuter and Mitsuko Uchida also had a decisive influence on his playing. Paul divides his time between performing, teaching and examining. His recitals with various principal soloists from the major London orchestras have received much critical acclaim. Paul has featured in numerous recordings and broadcasts with Kenneth Smith in a long-standing musical partnership.
