About

The Sammartinis may have been well-known during their lifetimes but their reputation did not prevent their works from disappearing into oblivion later on. In fact, the Sammartinis’ music survived in rare prints which were dispersed all over Europe.

Giuseppe Sammartini, an oboist and Giovanni’s senior by five years, exchanged his native Italy for London when he was just over 30. His brother who played the organ remained in Italy all his life.

This set of three CDs presents chamber music by both Sammartinis. The works by Giuseppe, the oboist, are delightful and refreshingly original, even the sonatas in which he employs just two recorders for accompaniment.

Giovanni’s Notturnos bear witness to the composer’s originality and skill. They also reflect his mastery of writing instrumental music, especially for the flute. As such, these small-scale pieces are all gems in their own right and represent a truly valuable addition to the chamber music repertoire in transition to the classical style.

All three ensembles play on period instruments.
