About

Nikolai Medtner has been given, by some, the nickname ‘the poor man’s Rachmaninov’. This is a little unfair perhaps but it is certainly true that some of his compositions have more direct appeal than others. Most of Medtner’s piano sonatas, though (extremely) hard to perform, rank among his more outgoing works.

Medtner’s music slowly captured the imagination of the record industry and only now are his piano concertos, mainly Nos. 2 and 3, receiving attention. Medtner only wrote music which involved the piano. Of his solo works, the 38 Fairy Tales and the 14 Sonatas form the core of his output.

Over the years, pianist Hamish Milne has recorded a large number of works by Medtner. Now these recordings have been collected in a single set by Brilliant Classics. The 7 CDs of this set contain the larger part of Medtner’s piano solo repertoire.
