About

"Backhaus was a shy, unaffected, introspective personality whose astounding abilities were so unsensationally presented that a lay audience had no notion of his fabulous talents." That was written by the pianist and composer Abram Chasins after a Backhaus piano recital at Carnegie Hall.

In 1970 Helmut Melchert received four gramophone records and tapes of this piano recital from Backhaus's widow. The recordings had been stored in the cellar of her house in cartons marked "sample records". Extensive research and restoration work now allows this unique sound document and portrait of a unique artist to be presented to the public.

Wilhelm Backhaus was one of the keyboard giants of the first half of the 20th century, a real powerhouse of a pianist... [in 1956] Backhaus was at the height of his technical command and interpretive powers.” Fanfare

Fryderyk CHOPIN: Etude No. 14 in F minor Op. 25/2;
