About

Walter Gieseking (1895-1956), an infant prodigy, was one of the great pianists of the 20th century, making his first public appearance aged five at the Paris Exposition in 1900 and playing Schumann's C major Fantasy, one of the most complex and demanding works in the pianists repertoire, the following year. He could learn an entire Wagner opera in an afternoon! He made his Berlin debut in 1920 playing Debussy and Ravel and launched his US career in New York in 1926. He gave eleven tours in the US up until 1939 and his Columbia recordings became best sellers.

After the war he remained in Germany and toured throughout Europe, eventually reappearing in New York in 1953 to standing ovations. He died suddenly following emergency surgery in October 1956.

This live 1953 broadcast from Cologne of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.4Joseph Keilberth is a rarity and has not been issued on pirate copies. There are four other recordings - three commercial (studio) recordings dating from 1939 (Böhm), 1951 (Karajan) and 1955 (Galliera) and one other live tape from 1950 (Dorati). Apart from the 1939 recording, the other commercial (studio) recordings appear not to be available. The sound from WDR's original master tapes is of high quality.

Schumann's Piano Concerto from a concert in Essen in 1951 conducted by Günter Wand is also exceptionally rare. There is a commercial recording from 1940 (Böhm) currently available as well as live performance from 1942 (Furtwängler). The sound is again excellent from the WDR and far superior to the earlier recordings.

The Debussy, Ravel and Bach fill-ups have NEVER been issued before and come from the Swedish Radio, 1948.
