About

Documentary and Performance.

We live during an age of “renaissance of the piano”, as the New York Times so surprisingly put it in the summer of 2005. A new generation has made the piano popular again: pianists are combining a passion for virtuosity with a willingness to expand their repertoire.

In addition to the evergreen classics, previously neglected works and composers are finally getting a just hearing as they perform formerly scorned works or they discover neglected composers.

In “Legato – The World of the Piano” the stars of this piano renaissance will be introduced and dealt with in depth. Every episode portrays an artist and shows an aspect of the world of the piano. Viewers meet the artists, get to know their styles, their methods of working and their personal idiosyncrasies. The sum of these portraits provides viewers with an overall picture of the art of the pianist.

Boris Berezovsky has established a remarkable reputation, both as the most powerful of virtuoso pianists and as a musician of unique insight and sensitivity. In this stunning recital he balances prodigies of virtuosity with an unfaltering musical integrity. This programme includes works by Beethoven, Medtner, Dafydd Llywelyn, Leopold Godowsky and Anatoly Liadov.

"Portrait of the Russian pianist Boris Berezovsky, tells the story of how a musical interpretation is being created. For the first time Boris Berezovsky encounters Welsh composer Dafydd Llywelyn of the score Change of Plans, written especially for him. They discuss and rehearse the piece in Munich and Brussels. Boris explains his ways of practicing, his technique and repertoire. Besides the Llywelyn piece he works on compositions by Beethoven, Medtner and Godowsky. The film culminates in the first performance of Change of Plans. Taking this title literally, Boris doesn't play the piece but improvises on Dafydd's chords"

Here, surely, we have the truest successor to the great Russian pianists.” Gramophone
