The action for Poulenc’s most substantial composition, Dialogues des Carmélites, takes place in France in the late eighteenth century and highlights the impacts of the Revolution and later Robespierre’s Reign of Terror on religious institutions.

German soprano Dagmar Schellenberger, who received much critical acclaim for this, her debut at La Scala, takes the role of the young aristocrat Blanche who – during the French Revolution seeks salvation in a convent from her fears and convulsions. She is joined by Anja Silja and supported by Riccardo Muti and the Orchestra and Chorus of La Scala.

Robert Carsen’s striking staging is now available on DVD. Conveying a comprehensive understanding of the music, the filming focuses on the excellent acting of the characters; this combined with the powerful dramaturgy and the minimalist set intensify the impressive production and together with the highest quality in sound technique, this TDK DVD provides an audiovisual feast.

Libretto by the composer based on the play by Georges Bernanos.
