About

Biber’s Mystery Sonatas are indeed mysterious. Since there is only one beautifully illustrated copy with a title page, the composer’s own title is not even known.

During his lifetime, Biber had a reputation for difficult and fanciful music. This music is, to say the least, unusual. Its occasional daring dissonance and extensive tone painting make these sonatas very interesting to listen to. They follow and ‘depict’ the 15 meditations of the rosary, a devotion to the Virgin Mary, in various ways.

Walter Reiter and his ensemble Cordaria specialise in performing 17th- and 18th-century violin repertoire. Their performances give this music a mystical air indeed. Maybe this is partly due to the (mental) juggling involved with the ‘scordatura’. This means that Biber demands some strings to be tuned differently from their normal pitch, thus creating (for the musicians) confusing discrepancies between the music on paper and the music they actually play.
