About

The Netherlands is somewhat of an organ paradise.  There are a large number of churches housing a multitude of historic organs. The organ built by Schnitger at the St. Laurens Church in Alkmaar is internationally famous, as is its organist Piet Kee.

This set of recordings features Kee at the keyboard in Alkmaar where he has been organist for many years. The organ was built in 1639-46 and rebuilt almost a century later so it is particularly suitable for performing music by Sweelinck (†1621), the master of Dutch organ composition.

2007 is the 200th anniversary of Buxtehude’s death and it is only fitting therefore to include some of his works performed on this very special organ. Both Buxtehude and J.S. Bach are well-suited to the St. Laurens’ instrument. Organist, Piet Kee, gives masterly executions with imaginative registrations of a variety of works, many of which are based on religious themes.
