About

Small scale oratorios from Italy in the 17th century first flourished with the works of Carissimi (1605-1674).  Giacomo Carissimi was one of the most influential 17th-century musical figures in Italy. This incredibly prolific composer mainly wrote sacred works. For his oratorios he mostly used texts from the Old Testament such as Jonas.

Giovanni Legrenzi’s (1626-1690) oratorios are of a somewhat later date and are part of an oeuvre which also includes some 20 operas. This composer was one of the great influences on Italian music of the latter half of the 17th century. ‘Il Cuor umano all’incanto’ is also known as ‘La vendita del core humano’ and was written in the early 1670’s.
