About

Born in Odessa, Shura Cherkassky (1909-1995) was a pupil of the legendary pianist Josef Hofman at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. Cherkassky was considered to be one of the greatest romantic virtuosos of the 20th Century and Chopin, Schumann and Liszt were central to his repertoire, although he was equally at home with pieces by Godowsky or Rachmaninov. He believed in being totally spontaneous, meaning that no two Cherkassky performances of the same piece were ever the same.

This disc presents two early BBC recitals from 1963 and 1964, recorded live in the studio and showcasing Cherkassky in some rare works by Berg and Skalkothas, as well more popular pieces with Brahms, Prokofiev and of course, Chopin. Some of this material has never been recorded commercially before.

Every Cherkassky BBC Legends CD has sold well and being live, they show him off at his best.

Recorded: BBC Studios, London, 21 April 1963 / 15 December 1964 (Chopin)
