About

This recording presents two great masterpieces for piano and violin by Beethoven and Schubert as well as a song by the latter. At first sight they may not seem to have much in common, but the content of these two masterpieces (the fantasy takes its main theme from the song)  show how many parallels exist  between the styles of these two great composers. Both are mature works: Beethoven's the 10th and last of his sonatas, Schuberts' Fantasy written in the last year of his life, and there is a certain quality, depth and emotion coming through serenity and lyricism, that these pieces share.

Mozart and Haydn had written sonatas for piano and violin before Beethoven, in which the piano is the dominating instrument, the violin playing a subordinate role. With his violin and cello sonatas, Beethoven has changed the nature of the relationship between the instruments,  and elevated them to a new art form in which the bowed instruments are in virtuoso dialogue with the piano.

Violinist Liza Ferschtman, still in her twenties, is already recognized as one of the most significant artists of her generation. Her performances are known for their passionate and yet intellectual qualities. She performed with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic, as well as the Prague Philharmonia, Liszt Chamber Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of South Africa, Slovenian Radio Orchestra and the Israel Symphony Orchestra; and worked with conductors Leonard Slatkin, Lev Markiz, Lawrence Renes, Jaap van Zweden, Frans Brüggen, Ed Spanjaard, Thierry Fisher, Mendi Rodan and Shlomo Mintz. After winning all national violin competitions as a teenager, Liza went for the Philip Morris Finest Selection Award and multiple prizes at the International Violin Competition of Sion, Switzerland.
