About

Alphons Diepenbrock (1862-1921) is one of the few renowned Dutch classical composers. His very personal style could best be described as a combination of sixteenth-century vocal polyphony and the chromatic harmony of Richard Wagner.

The vocal output of this self-taught composer is characterized by his choice of texts; those of the great poets (Goethe, Novalis and Verlaine for example) and these appear on the first CD of this set. Some of Diepenbrock’s orchestral music is featured on the second CD. Largely, these are works written to accompany stage plays: The Birds, Marsyas and Elektra for example. In addition, Dipenbrock’s Hymne for violin and orchestra is included. This lyrical and colourful piece does not have a literary background but is a vehicle for expressive and intense violin playing.

Beautifully warm and idiomatic performances of this highly romantic repertoire are given by the Dutch Residentie Orchestra from The Hague under Hans Vonk with Emmy Verhey on violin, and Robert Holl, bass.
