More Details on Oxford Psalms
Charivari Agréable, renowned for their imaginative programming, score another hit with this random sample of 17th Century devotional works for 3 men and basso continuo, by great English composers. Most of these composers have some connection with Oxford, be it academic, professional, or, more tenuously, fraternal. Also, most of the music represents a neglected genre: that of sacred songs and non-liturgical anthems for domestic consumption, 'fitt for private Chappels or other private meetings', to cite a rubric from William Child's only publication The First Set of Psalmes of III Voyces (1639).
Charivari Agreable are delighted to be joined by a formidable line up of singers including Rodrigo del Pozo, Simon Beston and Nicholas Perfect.
"Charivari Agréable [trans. 'pleasant tumult'] has carved something of a niche for itself in imaginative and well-thought-out programming. Its work is the fruit of both scholarly research and charismatic musicianship, a combination that puts it at the forefront of period-instrument ensembles" BBC Music Magazine
