About

"Schubert's Arpeggione Sonata has been at the heart of our repertoire ever since Alexandre Tharaud and I began to play together. Its apparently carefree luminosity cannot conceal an anguish which comes out into the open at the end of the second movement. . . . Berg assumes his dark inner demons, whereas Webern plays on sublimation and detachment. But all three share the same need for limitless confrontation with the basic elements of desire, sensuality, and death, making them almost palpable. They also have the same Viennese cultural references, first and foremost to dance, which is omnipresent: the waltz, macabre in Webern and furtive in Berg, and the ländler in Schubert. The lieder form the framework of this itinerary through time and feeling. They invite us on a journey, from the carefree purity of Das Wandern to the resigned, deeply moving summons of Nacht und Träume - which through the metaphor of sleep calls us to death, gentle and liberating."
