About

David Plantier, directing La Cetra, gives us an opportunity to discover Francesco Venturini - a native of Flanders, active at the court of Hanover, who spent most of his career there writing music that is at once French, Italian and German!

Venturini’s Concerti da Camera, published at Amsterdam around 1715, form a veritable manifesto for the mixed style known as ‘les goûts réunis’. For, beneath its rather catch-all title, this set conceals marvellous Italianate concertos as well as majestic overtures and energetic dances in the French manner, orchestrated with a sense of colour worthy of Rameau, Bach or Telemann.

With its regular members, La Cetra appears in concert and opera projects of varying sizes. Over a very short time, the ensemble has found its own style and proved its excellent sound quality, rapidly earning an enviable reputation. Its concerts under Gustav Leonhardt, Jordi Savall, Attilio Cremonesi, Geoffrey Lancaster and René Jacobs have been enthusiastically applauded. La Cetra’s lively activities are complemented by engagements in major operatic venues.

"Brussels-born, Francesco Venturini was extremely popular in the 1700s but remains little-known today. This excellent set, of his Concerti da Camera, deserves to help reverse that decline. La Cetra and their violinist and conductor David Plantier are joyful and persuasive in making Venturini's case." Gramophone - Editors Choice - April 2007
