About

This is a major milestone not only for Decca but for the musical world’s understanding of Joseph Haydn, the Father of the Symphony. For the first time ever, his complete Symphonies – all 107 of them – can now be heard in historically-informed performance style, on period instruments, the way Haydn would have heard them. This 35-CD set features two of the most prominent period instrument pioneers, the late and much-admired Christopher Hogwood and Frans Brüggen. Notably, the collection also includes four newly-recorded symphonies by Accademia Bizantina under Ottavio Dantone especially for this project – Nos 78 to 81.

“Haydn was looking to the future but he was simultaneously tied to the emotional world of the past. With period instruments, one can better recreate the expression of those emotions.” – Ottavio Dantone

- 35-CD lift-off-lid box set
- Extensive booklet featuring an index of symphonies, and a new note by Haydn expert David Threasher in English, French and German

Reviews

Dantone’s wiry, stringy sound, with plenty of rhythmic bounce, is different both from Hogwood’s poised coolness and Brüggen’s warmer expressiveness. In assembling the complete sequence, Decca has replaced Hogwood’s middle-period symphonies with long unavailable versions that Brüggen recorded with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. … Really, there is enough wonderfully subtle music in this set to nourish a lifetime’s listening.  Nicholas Kenyon
