About

Sopranos Evelyn Tubb and Dame Emma Kirkby were pioneers in the field of historically informed performances of early music and continue to be two of the most highly regarded performers in their field.

Evelyn Tubb’s musical education started at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and she continued her vocal studies with Jessica Cash. She has been a member of the renowned early music ensemble the Consort of Musicke since 1977 and, as well as her work on the concert stage and recording studio, she is in demand as a teacher throughout the world. Evelyn Tubb regularly directs masterclasses at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland and at the Dartington International Summer School of the UK.

Dame Emma Kirkby has performed with many of the world’s pre-eminent early music ensembles, including the Taverner Consort, the Academy of Ancient Music, Floreligium, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the Consort of Musicke, performing music from Hildegard of Bingen through the Renaissance and Baroque periods to Haydn and Mozart.

The English Trumpet Virtuosi was founded in 1992. The ensemble performs on historic brass and stringed instruments, which are often joined by woodwind, percussion and voices.

'Sound of the Trumpets' is a celebration of the music for trumpet and voices by Henry Purcell and his colleagues in 17th- and 18th-century England. Virtuoso trumpeter and instrument maker John Shore was a key figure in inspiring this generation of composers to expand the demands – both musical and technical – of the trumpet, an instrument which had previously been seen in mainly militaristic terms.

While Henry Purcell’s reputation has lasted across the centuries, those of his contemporaries – including Richard Leveridge, William Topham and Purcell’s younger brother Daniel Purcell – have not fared so well. This disc brings their music vividly back to life.
